A two-piece suit (jacket + trouser) needs about 3.25 metres of 58-inch suiting as a standard cut. Larger sizes, taller builds, and checks or stripes (for pattern matching) need a little more — we confirm your exact length before cutting.

A three-piece suit, with a waistcoat, needs about 3.75 metres as a standard cut. Add a little for larger sizes or for matching patterns at the seams.

A safari suit needs about 3.0 metres, usually in an easy-care poly-viscose suiting.

A single trouser (pant) needs about 1.25 metres of suiting as a standard cut; larger sizes need a little more.

GSM stands for grams per square metre — the weight of one square metre of the cloth. Lighter weights suit summer and travel; heavier weights give more structure and warmth for winter and formal wear. Note: some mills quote weight per linear metre (grams per running metre of cloth) instead, which reads higher than GSM for the same fabric — ask which measure a number refers to.
