How Much Fabric Do You Need for a Suit?

A quick reference, with the things that change the answer.

A common question, and an important one — buy too little and you cannot finish the garment. Here are sensible starting figures. Your tailor will confirm the exact amount for your size and design.

Quick reference

Two-piece suit (jacket + trousers): about 3 to 3.5 metres.

Three-piece suit (with waistcoat): about 3.5 to 4 metres.

Trousers only: about 1.25 to 1.5 metres.

Shirt: about 1.6 to 2 metres.

Sherwani: about 3 to 3.5 metres, plus fabric for the bottom.

What changes the amount

Height and build — a taller or larger frame needs more.

Pattern matching — checks and stripes need extra so the lines align.

Style — wider lapels, pleats, a longer sherwani or a fuller cut all add up.

Our advice

When in doubt, buy a little extra — a small leftover is far better than coming up short mid-stitch. Tell us the garment and your measurements and we will recommend the exact quantity.
