One of the most common questions we hear at the counter is simply: "How much fabric do I need?" Buy too little and your tailor is stuck; buy too much and you have paid for cloth you will not use. Here is a clear guide for Indian formalwear.
Quick reference (average build)
- Two-piece suit (jacket + trouser): about 3.25–3.5 metres.
- Three-piece suit (with waistcoat): about 3.75–4 metres.
- Bandhgala / Jodhpuri: about 3.5–3.75 metres.
- Sherwani (knee-length): about 3–3.5 metres of the main fabric, plus lining and any contrast.
- Safari suit: about 3.25 metres.
- Trouser only: about 1.25–1.4 metres.
What changes the number
- Your size and height — a taller or broader build can add 0.25–0.5 metre.
- Patterns — stripes and checks need matching at the seams, so add a little extra.
- Style — wider lapels, pleats, a longer sherwani or a fuller cut all use more cloth.
Our tip
When in doubt, take the higher figure — a small margin lets a good tailor match patterns cleanly and leaves cloth for future alterations. If you tell us the garment and your measurements, we will recommend the exact length and a fabric to match the occasion.
