Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November this year, and the question at our counter has already changed from “what is new?” to “Diwali ke liye kya pehnein?” The honest answer is that Diwali is not one outfit. It is three or four evenings in a row — the office party, the card night, the puja itself, and the Bhai Dooj lunch — and the cloth that is right for one is wrong for the next.
So this is not a list of “trending colours”. It is what we actually hand across the counter for each evening, and why.

The puja evening: colour that catches the light
The night itself is lit by diyas, fairy lights and a phone flash. Under that light a flat black disappears and a pale pastel washes out. What glows is depth with a little surface — a wine or maroon with a self-design, a deep bottle green, a rich navy with a jacquard. These photograph the way the evening feels.

For a bandhgala or a Nehru jacket over a plain kurta, this is the evening to spend on the cloth. A Super 120s or 140s wool-rich holds the closed collar crisply and does not shine like a synthetic under flash.
The card party and the office Diwali: lighter, easier
These are long evenings, indoors, warm, with food. Nobody wants to sit through a taash night in a structured jacket. Here the cloth should breathe and the colour should be festive but not formal: ivory or cream, a maroon or a deep green in a kurta, a linen if the weather is still mild in your city.

A cream or ivory kurta with a coloured Nehru jacket is the safest combination we know: the jacket carries the festival, the kurta carries the comfort, and the two can be worn separately for the rest of the season.
| The evening | What we suggest | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lakshmi puja at home | Wine, maroon or bottle-green bandhgala / Nehru jacket over an ivory kurta | Deep colour with a self-design or jacquard glows under diya and flash light |
| Card party / friends' Diwali | Ivory, cream or maroon kurta; linen or fine cotton | Long, warm evenings — comfort first, colour second |
| Office Diwali | Navy or charcoal suit with a wine or mustard pocket square, or a plain kurta with a textured Nehru jacket | Festive without leaving the office dress code behind |
| Bhai Dooj / family lunch | Beige, sage or sky-blue kurta; printed cotton shirt | Daylight — lighter colours photograph better than deep ones |
Two colours we steer people away from
Flat black for the puja — it reads as a silhouette in every photograph and many families avoid it for the occasion anyway. Bright pastels at night — a baby pink or lemon that looks lovely in daylight goes chalky under fairy lights. Save them for the daytime lunch.
